Langtang Valley Trek: Itinerary, Cost and Safety Guide

Admin UserAdmin UserOctober 8, 2026 6 min read

The Langtang Valley trek is the closest major Himalayan trek to Kathmandu. A day's drive takes you to a valley of glaciers, Tamang villages and yak pastures, ending at Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m) beneath Langtang Lirung. The valley is rebuilding strongly after the 2015 earthquake and is a wonderful alternative to Everest or Annapurna. This guide covers the route, a day-by-day itinerary, costs, permits, difficulty, safety and what makes Langtang special.

Why trek Langtang?

  • No flights required, so no weather delays on a flight.
  • Close to Kathmandu, ideal for short trips and combined itineraries.
  • Cultural richness. Tamang culture, yak cheese, monasteries and mani walls.
  • Less crowded than Everest and Annapurna, although popularity is growing.
  • Gradual altitude gain, which helps acclimatisation.

Itinerary: 7-day Langtang Valley trek

  1. Day 1. Drive Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (7–8 hours on a rough road).
  2. Day 2. Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel through rhododendron forest.
  3. Day 3. Lama Hotel to Langtang Village (about 3,430 m).
  4. Day 4. Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m).
  5. Day 5. Acclimatisation: Tserko Ri (4,984 m) or Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m).
  6. Day 6. Descend to Lama Hotel.
  7. Day 7. Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi and drive back to Kathmandu.

Many trekkers add a rest day at Kyanjin Gompa, explore the cheese factory and visit the glacier moraine.

Stage-by-stage highlights

Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel. A steady climb through bamboo and rhododendron forest beside the Langtang Khola. Look for langur monkeys and, with luck, red pandas, which live in the park.

Lama Hotel to Langtang Village. The forest opens into a wide glacial valley with views of Langtang Lirung. The old Langtang village was destroyed in the 2015 earthquake and landslide, and the rebuilt settlement sits nearby, with memorials to those who died.

Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa. Stone-walled yak pastures, Buddhist chortens and glacier views lead to Kyanjin Gompa, a small village with lodges, a monastery and a cheese factory.

Tserko Ri. A steep climb of about 1,100 m from Kyanjin, rewarded with panoramic views of Langtang Lirung, Shisha Pangma and the glaciers. Start before dawn and take it slowly.

Safety, altitude and difficulty

Langtang is a moderate trek with steady climbs. The altitude profile is gentler than Everest, but headaches and fatigue are possible above 3,500 m, and the Tserko Ri ascent is high. Use the principles in the altitude sickness guide: climb slowly, drink water, rest when needed and descend if symptoms worsen. Carry travel insurance that covers helicopter evacuation, and be aware that landslides can affect the road in the monsoon.

Costs and permits

A guided Langtang trek costs roughly USD 500–900, with transport, permits, guide, porter, lodging and meals. You need a Langtang National Park entry permit (around NPR 3,000 for most foreigners) and, depending on current rules, a TIMS card or equivalent. Your agency arranges both. See the permit guide. The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation publishes protected-area information.

Best time to go

October–November has the clearest skies, and March–May brings rhododendron blooms and warmer days. Winter is cold, with some lodges closed at higher altitude. The monsoon brings rain, leeches and landslide risk on the road. See best time to visit Nepal for a full seasonal guide.

Culture: the Tamang heartland

The Langtang region is home to the Tamang people, who have Tibetan-influenced traditions, language and Buddhist practice. You will see prayer wheels, mani walls and small gompas along the trail. Visit the Kyanjin Gompa, taste yak cheese and learn about the 2015 earthquake from local guides and lodge owners. Walk clockwise around mani walls and ask before photographing people.

Extensions and alternatives

  • Gosainkunda Lake. Extend the trek by three to four days to a sacred high-altitude lake at about 4,380 m.
  • Tamang Heritage Trail. A cultural loop with homestays and hot springs.
  • Helambu. A gentler route close to Kathmandu, good in winter.
  • Compare other quiet treks in our guide to less crowded treks in Nepal.

The 2015 earthquake and recovery

The April 2015 earthquake triggered a massive avalanche and landslide that buried the old Langtang village, killing hundreds of people, including villagers, trekkers and guides. Since then, residents have rebuilt a new Langtang village, lodges and trails, and the trekking economy has recovered. Visiting supports that recovery. Respect memorial sites, listen to local stories and consider staying in locally owned lodges.

Gosainkunda extension

Strong trekkers can add Gosainkunda, a sacred lake at about 4,380 m that is a major Hindu pilgrimage site, especially during the Janai Purnima festival. The route crosses the high Laurebina La and adds three to four days. It is demanding, with cold nights and limited facilities, and it needs good acclimatisation.

Wildlife and nature

Langtang National Park, established in 1976, protects forests, alpine meadows and glaciers. Wildlife includes red panda, Himalayan black bear, Himalayan tahr, musk deer and many bird species. Sightings are never guaranteed, but early mornings in the forest give the best chances. Stay on trails and keep a respectful distance from animals.

Yak cheese and local food

Kyanjin Gompa has a small cheese factory that sells yak and cow cheese, a local speciality. Menus also include dal bhat, momos, noodles and Tibetan-style bread. Try the local butter tea and buy cheese directly to support local producers.

A sample budget

Item Typical cost (USD)

Accommodation and food

Lodges range from simple to comfortable, with twin rooms and shared bathrooms. Menus include dal bhat, noodles, pasta, momos and local yak cheese. Hot showers are available in lower villages for a fee. Carry cash in rupees, as ATMs are not available on the route.

What to pack

Layers, a down jacket for cold nights, waterproof shell, warm hat and gloves, trekking poles, sturdy boots, sun protection and a headlamp. A sleeping bag rated to about −10 °C is recommended. See our packing list.

Getting to Syabrubesi

The road from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi is long and winding, and conditions vary by season. Private jeeps are more comfortable than local buses, but both can face delays after rain. Allow a buffer day at the start and end of the trek.
