Best Time to Visit Nepal: Month-by-Month Weather and Festivals

Admin UserAdmin UserOctober 8, 2026 7 min read

The best time to visit Nepal for most travellers is October to November and March to May. Skies are clearest, trekking conditions are best, and festivals add colour. But Nepal is a year-round destination if you choose the right region and activity. This guide walks through each season and month, explains what you can do, what to expect and how to avoid the biggest crowds and highest prices.

Short answer: October and April are the most reliable months for trekking. Winter suits cultural trips, wildlife and low-altitude treks. The monsoon suits rain-shadow regions such as Upper Mustang.

Nepal's four seasons

Nepal's climate varies enormously by altitude, from subtropical lowlands in the Terai to arctic conditions above 5,000 m. The country has four main seasons, shaped by the South Asian monsoon.

Autumn (September–November)

Crystal-clear skies, stable weather, big festivals (Dashain and Tihar) and the busiest trekking period. Arrival numbers typically peak from mid-October to mid-November. This is the best season for first-time visitors who want reliable mountain views, but also the most expensive.

Winter (December–February)

Cold at altitude, but days are sunny at lower elevations. Great for Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and short treks. Very high passes may be closed, and many lodges at high altitude close. Skies are often clear in the mornings.

Spring (March–May)

Rhododendrons bloom, temperatures rise and expedition season begins at Everest. Hazy afternoons are common, but mornings are bright and valleys are green. April is particularly lovely for trekking in the lower and middle hills.

Monsoon (June–August)

Heavy rain and cloud, but green scenery and fewer crowds. Roads can be affected by landslides. Rain-shadow regions such as Upper Mustang and Dolpo stay relatively dry. See our monsoon travel guide for how to plan around the rain.

Crowds and prices

October and April are the most expensive and busiest months. Book flights, lodges and Lukla seats well in advance. Shoulder months (early March, late May, early September and late November) offer excellent value with less crowding. The monsoon and the coldest part of winter are the cheapest, but come with trade-offs in weather and access.

What to pack by season

  • Autumn and spring: layers, a down jacket for mountain nights, sun protection and a light rain shell.
  • Winter: a warm down jacket, insulated boots and gloves for the mountains; lighter layers for Kathmandu and Chitwan.
  • Monsoon: waterproofs, quick-dry clothing, leech socks and a pack cover.

Our trekking packing list turns this into a full checklist.

Festivals worth planning around

Nepal's festival calendar follows the lunar cycle, so dates shift every year. The biggest are Dashain and Tihar in autumn, Holi in March, Buddha Jayanti in spring and Indra Jatra in September. If you want to see a festival, book early, as hotels and transport fill up and some offices close. Details and typical timing are in our Nepal festivals calendar.

Sample itineraries by season

  • October: a 14-day trip with Kathmandu, Chitwan, Pokhara and a trek (14-day itinerary).
  • December: a 10-day cultural and wildlife trip (10-day itinerary).
  • April: a 7-day taster with Kathmandu, Pokhara and Poon Hill (7-day itinerary).
  • July: a trip focused on Upper Mustang and Pokhara.

How the seasons affect flights and roads

Domestic flights, particularly to Lukla, are most reliable in clear autumn and spring mornings, but delays happen year-round. The monsoon brings frequent cancellations and landslides that can close roads for hours or days. In winter, fog in the Terai can delay flights into Kathmandu and Bhairahawa. In every season, keep a buffer day at the end of a trip and never schedule an international flight on the same day as a mountain flight.

Best time by region

Because Nepal spans lowland jungle and Himalayan peaks, the best season depends on where you are going.

Region Best months Notes
Kathmandu Valley Oct–Nov, Feb–Apr Mild weather, good views; air quality is better in autumn and after rain
Pokhara Oct–Nov, Feb–May Clear mountain views in the mornings; very wet in July and August
Chitwan and Bardia Oct–Mar (wildlife peak Feb–May) Hot and humid from April; floods and closures in the monsoon
Everest region Oct–Nov, Mar–May Winter is possible but extremely cold; monsoon has poor views
Annapurna region Oct–Nov, Mar–May Winter snow blocks high passes; monsoon is wet at lower altitude
Langtang Oct–Nov, Mar–May Wet monsoon, cold winter
Upper Mustang and Dolpo Mar–Nov Rain-shadow regions; good in summer
Manaslu and Tsum Valley Mar–May, Sep–Nov Restricted-area permits; high pass is snow-prone in winter
Lumbini Oct–Mar Very hot in April–June

Typical temperatures

These are rough guides and vary by year.

  • Kathmandu: about 2–18 °C in January, 20–30 °C in May to August.
  • Pokhara: a little warmer than Kathmandu throughout the year.
  • Chitwan: cool mornings in winter, 35 °C or more in late spring.
  • Namche Bazaar (3,440 m): around −5 to 10 °C in winter, 5 to 18 °C in spring and autumn.
  • Gorak Shep (5,164 m): below freezing at night in every season.

Mountain weather changes quickly, so always carry layers regardless of the forecast.

Air quality and visibility

Visibility is best after the monsoon (October and November) and in the early mornings of spring. Pre-monsoon haze in April and May can reduce long-distance views, though close scenery remains beautiful. Kathmandu's air quality is generally worse in the dry months of winter and spring, so if you are sensitive, consider a mask, avoid heavy traffic and plan your trekking days outside the valley.

Choosing the best month for your priorities

  • Maximum clarity: late October to November.
  • Warm days and flowers: April.
  • Fewer people: early March, late May, early September and December.
  • Lowest prices: June to August and January to February.
  • Festivals: September to November, with Dashain and Tihar.
  • Wildlife: February to May for tigers; October to March for general wildlife.

What each season feels like on the ground

October. The cities hum with festival energy, kites fill the sky above Kathmandu and the mountains stand out in sharp detail every morning. Trails are lively, and you will make friends easily in tea houses. Expect to book ahead for almost everything.

December and January. Mornings in Kathmandu and Pokhara are cold and misty, but by midday the sun is warm. Chitwan is pleasant and the jungle is easy to see through. High-altitude trekking is quiet and demanding, but those who go are rewarded with empty trails and sparkling snow.

April. The hills are green and flowering, the air is warm and the days are long. It is the best month for lower-altitude treks such as Poon Hill, with rhododendron forests in full colour.

July. The rain brings lush scenery, waterfalls and mist, and the tourist trail is quiet. It is a good time for cultural travel, for the rain-shadow north, and for those who value solitude over views.

Common seasonal mistakes

  1. Booking Everest in July and discovering the views and flights are poor.
  2. Visiting Chitwan in May without being ready for the heat.
  3. Planning a high pass in winter without a buffer day or the right gear.
  4. Ignoring festival closures. During Dashain, many offices and shops close for days.
  5. Overbooking autumn. If you wait until August to book October, you may lose your first-choice lodges and flights.

Quick decision guide

If you want guaranteed mountain views, choose late October or November. If you prefer warmth and flowers, choose April. If you want solitude and low prices, choose the monsoon in the rain-shadow north or the clear, cold weeks of winter in the lowlands.
